Hardness Test

Hardness Test

The Hardness Test determines a material's strength or resistance to penetration or deformation, and is usually performed on steel. On steel structures such as factory frames, warehouses, bridges, and towers, the test is carried out on site using a portable device.

Steel hardness correlates with tensile strength, so the test results can be used to estimate the tensile strength and grade of the installed steel. This is important when material data is unavailable, the steel grade is in doubt, or the steel structure is to be evaluated or strengthened.

The test is performed without cutting the steel sections, so the structure can continue to function normally, with only very minimal surface damage at the test points.

Scope of Work & Work Stages

  1. Element & Test Point SelectionPoints are selected on steel sections, plates, or connections that are representative of the structure.
  2. Surface PreparationThe steel surface at each test point is cleaned of paint, rust, and dirt until clean and smooth.
  3. Equipment CalibrationThe hardness tester is calibrated before use.
  4. TestingMeasurements are taken at several points on each element to ensure representative results.
  5. Data ConversionHardness values are converted into estimated tensile strength and steel grade.
  6. Analysis & ReportingThe results are compared with the design steel specifications and compiled into a report.

What You Get

  • Steel hardness data at each test point
  • Estimated tensile strength and steel grade
  • Comparison with design steel specifications
  • Photo documentation and test point plan
  • Conclusions and recommendations in the test report
