Hammer Test

Hammer Test

The Hammer Test, or Schmidt Rebound Hammer Test, is a non-destructive test for estimating the compressive strength of the tested concrete. The instrument produces a rebound number from the impact of a hammer on the concrete surface. The harder the concrete surface, the higher the rebound number, which is then converted into an estimate of concrete compressive strength.

This test is fast, practical, and economical, making it suitable for checking many points on various structural elements in a short time. The results help assess the uniformity of concrete quality and identify areas of lower quality than others.

Please note that the Hammer Test measures the surface hardness of concrete, so its results are indicative. For higher accuracy, Hammer Test results should be combined with the UPV Test and/or correlated with concrete coring results.

Scope of Work & Work Stages

  1. Element & Test Point SelectionPoints are selected on structural columns, beams, slabs, or walls that represent the building's condition.
  2. Surface PreparationThe concrete surface is cleaned and smoothed of plaster, paint, or dirt to ensure accurate readings.
  3. Equipment CalibrationThe instrument is checked and calibrated before testing begins.
  4. TestingImpacts are made at several points in each test area with a sufficient number of readings.
  5. Data ProcessingRebound values are averaged, corrected for test direction, and then converted into an estimate of concrete compressive strength.
  6. Analysis & ReportingResults are compared with the design concrete grade and presented in a report.
